“As an ophthalmologist, over the past years I have been able to convert my passion and dedication for ophthalmology into a career I am proud of. Born and raised in the Netherlands, I discovered my fascination for medical science at an early age. During my ophthalmology internship at Tjongerschans hospital, through Utrecht University, my passion for ophthalmology really began to develop. Initially, I thought I wanted to become a surgeon – I liked the idea of operating – but after considering various specialisations, I ultimately consciously chose ophthalmology. The combination of diagnosing and treating and the crucial role that eyes play in daily life appealed to me immensely.”

“Throughout my career, I have helped numerous patients improve their vision and contributed to scientific research and innovation within ophthalmology. My specific areas of focus are cataract surgery, medical retina, and strabismus, which consistently offer me new challenges and opportunities to deepen my knowledge and skills.”

“Currently, I work as an ophthalmologist at OLVG in Amsterdam, where I play a role in both clinical and surgical care. My daily work is highly varied – from consultations and diagnostics to performing cataract and squint surgeries. In addition, I am involved in training young ophthalmologists.”

“Sustainability is something I value greatly in my work.”

“I strongly believe in the importance of sustainable medical technologies and procedures that not only improve the quality of care, but also reduce environmental impact. A good example of sustainable innovation in ophthalmology is the OS4 and CataRhex from Oertli.” The OS4 is an all-in-one platform for ophthalmic surgery, designed for precision and efficiency. Because the tubing system consists of two parts, you can help multiple patients with a single bottle. Reusable cassettes are also available. The CataRhex, on the other hand, is a compact, portable device for cataract surgery that delivers powerful performance despite its small size. This makes the device ideal for use in mobile clinics in remote areas.

“Incredible to see how a compact portable device can make such a big difference in people’s lives.”

“Sometimes I reflect on special moments that give my work extra meaning. For instance, I remember a patient who, after being visually impaired for years, regained his sight thanks to surgery with the Oertli OS4. I will never forget the joy and gratitude in his eyes.”

“Another unforgettable moment was during a mission to a remote village in Africa, where I helped people restore their sight with the CataRhex. It was incredible to see how such a small, compact portable device can perform just as well as a large non-portable phaco machine.”

“I remain committed to high-quality eye care and see it as my mission to put sustainability and innovation at the heart of my practice. Using devices such as the OS4 and the CataRhex, I can serve not only my patients, but also the environment. I hope to share my experiences and stories, thereby inspiring not only my colleagues in the medical world, but also the next generation of ophthalmologists.”
